Red Snapper

Red snapper are one of the most sought after catches for anglers around for Perdido Key, Pensacola, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. They are known just as much for their tough fight as they are their delicious meat. Red snapper have a limited season where it is legal to catch them, which usually runs from the beginning of June through July. During these months, you can typically find these tasty fish in shallow waters. Even if you are used to catching red snapper in other waters, make sure you check on local regulations. Regulations change for red snapper between states and even within states.

Vermillion Snapper

Also known as mingo or beeliner, vermillion snapper are one of the common sportfish you can find off the coast of Florida or Alabama. Vermillion snapper are a favorite target of deepwater anglers who are looking to fill their bags with tasty fish that are perfect for the pan. There is no particular season for vermillion snapper, as they can be targeted year round. However, they must be at least 10 inches in length in order to keep.

Pompano

Pompano are a favorite of Gulf Coast inshore anglers because of their deliciousness and how hard they fight compared to other fish of their size. The best time to target pompano is typically toward the end of winter and into the early spring before waters get too warm. Pompano are a lot of fun to target on light tackle and are a prized fish for both fly fishermen and traditional anglers. 

Perdido Key Fishing Charter Triggerfish

Triggerfish

Triggerfish are a favorite target of anglers in the Gulf of Mexico, especially in the waters near Pensacola and Orange Beach. However, they are one of the most regulated fish in our waters. There are two separate closures throughout the year where it is not legal to catch triggerfish in the Gulf of Mexico. Triggerfish fishing is not permitted during January and February, as well as June and July. Anglers are currently only allowed one triggerfish per day and they must be at least 15 inches. In spite of these regulations, they are still a favorite of anglers because of their hard fight and delicious meat.

Grouper

There are numerous species of grouper that make their home in the Gulf of Mexico and all of them are prized targets by anglers. However, regulations change dramatically between the different species and the different waters where they are found. This is one reason why it is always best to target groupers with an experienced fishing charter. Our captains can help you find the fish while making sure you are meeting all of the relevant regulations.

Redfish

Redfish, also known as red drum, are a favorite of inshore anglers near Pensacola and Orange Beach. Redfish fishing is usually red hot during the summer months and provides anglers a tasty challenge that really tests their tackle. Compared to other fish of the same size, they put up a great fight and make for an exciting day on the water.

Amberjack

Amberjack are a great eating fish that can truly test anglers with their size and power. These fish can grow in excess of 100 lbs. And are known to use every ounce to avoid making it into an angler’s sack. Because they are so prized by anglers fishing near Orange Beach or Pensacola, they are heavily regulated. There are only two windows to legally catch amberjack each year; May 1-30 and August 1 - October 31.

Flounder

Flounder are not the largest targets by anglers in the Gulf of Mexico, but they are definitely some of the tastiest. A favorite of inshore anglers all over the Gulf of Mexico, flounders are ambush hunters that can be targeted using a variety of methods. Anglers will find success using a variety of jigs or live bait to target flounders in and around Orange Beach, Pensacola, and Perdido Key. Flounder can be targeted most of the year, however, they are off limits from October 15 - November 31.

Sheepshead

Sheepshead are a common fish species that can be found in the Gulf of Mexico and are a favorite catch amongst inshore anglers. These fish can be targeted year round as long as they are at least 12 inches in length. While sheepshead do not get nearly the attention that other Gulf species garner, they are quite delicious. Sheepshead love crustaceans, which makes shrimp a go-to bait for anglers who are looking to fill up on these tasty fish.

King Mackerel

King mackerel or kingfish are a favorite of anglers in the Gulf of Mexico because they can be caught year round, inshore or offshore. As long as there is bait in the water, king mackerel will be near. Anglers love going after king mackerel because of the thrill of the fight. Like most pelagic species, king mackerel are fast swimmers. They cause quite a thrill for anglers because once they get on your line, they usually take it on a big run.

Spanish Mackerel

Spanish mackerel are a favorite summertime catch in the Gulf of Mexico. This species loves warm water, which is why the main season for them lasts through the end of September. After that, they usually head south where the water stays warm year-round. While not as large as king mackerel, Spanish mackerel are still known for their fight relative to their size, as well as their taste. Spanish mackerel stocks were significantly depleted in the last century, however, regulations on commercial fishing have allowed populations to bounce back. Spanish mackerel stocks are currently very healthy, which is why they are a great example of sustainable seafood.

Mahi Mahi

Mahi mahi have many names. Sometimes they are referred to as dolphin fish or even as dorado. Regardless of what they are called, they are a favorite of anglers in the Gulf of Mexico because they are great on a plate, fun on a line, and beautiful to look at. Mostly an offshore species, mahi mahi can be caught using a variety of methods from trolling, to jigs, to live bait. April and May is the peak season to catch them, however, experienced captains can find them year-round.

Yellowfin Tuna

Yellowfin tuna are some of the most prized fish by all anglers in the Gulf of Mexico. Offshore anglers relish the chance to target yellowfin tuna because of the fun and excitement they provide. Yellowfin tuna are powerful open water hunters and provide a real challenge to anglers once they are on the line. Not only are they some of the strongest fish in the ocean, they can also grow quite large. While it might take some effort to get them in the boat, the reward is worth it. Yellowfin tuna are some of the most delicious fish in our waters and are perfect for tuna steaks or sliced up into sashimi.

The Gulf of Mexico is home to many species of shark and a lot of them can be legally targeted by anglers. Our fishing charters will give you a chance to do battle with thresher sharks, blue sharks, mako sharks, smoothhound, and many more. Each species is regulated differently and some of them look very similar. For this reason, chartering a fishing trip with an experienced captain is one of the best ways to target sharks and make sure you are consistent with all state and federal regulations.

Bonita

Few fish are as controversial as the bonita. Also known as bonito or even ‘Little Tunny’, bonita are a pelagic species that are closely related to tuna. Many dismiss bonita in favor of other species that are more popular to eat, however, when done right, they are quite an underrated and unappreciated treat. Bonita make great tablefare when treated properly and the bloodlines are separated from the rest of the meat. Additionally, they can be quite fun to catch on light gear. They fight like tuna, but are much smaller. Sizing down your gear while targeting bonita can make for a really fun day on the water.
